Ayer Neuroscience Institute Neurosurgery Department

At the Ayer Neuroscience Institute, we’ve come to realize that it’s not just what we do, but how we do it that matters most. Our institute structure features a tight, collegiate, empathetic team of neurosurgeons who coordinate very intricate surgical care plans while keeping the focus on you at all times.

With dozens of convenient locations throughout Connecticut including Hartford, Torrington, Norwich, Meriden, Bridgeport, Westport, Cheshire, and Mystic, we work hard to make care accessible and convenient for you. From the first surgical consult to follow-up care, we tailor the experience to your specific needs, working with you, your primary care provider, and related subspecialists on a care and recovery plan designed to get you back to your life as quickly and fully as possible.

Many on our team of neurosurgeons subspecialize for added expertise, and every case is brought before a clinical session that includes neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, physical therapists, medical oncologists, neurologists, psychologists and other specialists who lend their insight. Neurologic conditions are often challenging to diagnose and treat, but our team is passionate about finding a solution.

We will not give up, and are often the first in the area to try such techniques as removing a brain tumor through the nose.

After surgery, your team coordinates with any rehabilitation services needed for your recovery. Our social workers and neuropsychologists help identify and address any other needs you may have.

These layers of care represent the power and compassion of the Ayer Institute. We are here for you and your family.

High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound Improves Local Parkinson's Warrior's Tremors

Dexter Cheney could barely hold a pen in his trembling hand due to advanced Parkinson's Disease. When asked to trace a spiral drawn on paper, his marks looked like jagged teeth that trailed off into a series of dots. A ground-breaking procedure conducted at Hartford Hospital in August, however, controlled the tremors inside the man's hands. He traced the spiral again with one smooth, solid stroke. The life-changing procedure was the first use of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) in Connecticut. Conducted by Dr. Patrick Senatus, MD, Director of Functional Neurosurgery at the Hartford HealthCare Ayer Neuroscience Institute, the incisonless treatment offered immediate improvement in the man's essential tremor. 👏
